About

In the practice's own words, from its website

Equinox Accounting is the trading name of Johnson & Stewart Pty Ltd, a tax agency at 384 Rokeby Road, Subiaco, registered with the Tax Practitioners Board under registration 76578001. It is led by two directors, Paul Johnson and Malcolm Stewart, both Fellows of CPA Australia.

The practice provides accounting, tax, bookkeeping and corporate secretarial services to business owners, individuals, families and self-managed super funds. It uses Class Super for SMSF work and Xero for business accounting, and transfers, signs and stores documents through myprosperity rather than by email.

Its name is the point it keeps coming back to. The equinox is the day on which day and night are the same length; balance runs through the work — balance sheets in the accounting, balanced goals in the planning, and a balance between what a client needs now and what they want later.

In most circumstances the fee is quoted up front in the terms of engagement, which you sign before the work starts. The tax agent and accounting services described here are provided by Johnson & Stewart Pty Ltd independently and separately from financial advice services, and are not subject to the same regulatory oversight as financial advice.

Services

  • Accounting, tax & bookkeeping

Accounting, tax and bookkeeping for business owners, individuals and families, with the package tailored to what you need rather than sold as a fixed bundle. Xero is used and recommended for real-time processing.

  • SMSF accounting

Accounting, bookkeeping and taxation for self-managed super funds, run in Class Super so data comes directly from banks and investment platforms — live access to the fund, monthly processing, annual statements, the income tax return and BAS, and the trustee minutes.

  • Individual & family tax

Comprehensive taxation and accounting for individuals and families, with documents transferred, signed and stored through myprosperity instead of email, and a fixed price quoted before the work begins.

  • Business advisory & coaching

Business mentoring for new and established businesses, worked on collaboratively: target planning, budgeting, benchmarking, goal setting and accountability, cashflow forecasting, management reports and building the business plan itself.

  • Corporate secretarial

Corporate secretarial services so a company's compliance requirements are met and its registers stay current, handled alongside the accounting rather than farmed out to a separate provider.

Questions people ask

What software do you use?
myprosperity for transferring, signing and storing documents; Xero for online accounting and real-time processing; Class Super for managing an SMSF, with secure data feeds from most bank accounts and investment platforms; and Hubdoc for capturing the key information from bills and receipts, which reduces the data entry you have to do.
Why do you need to see my identification?
The Tax Practitioners Board requires all registered tax practitioners to verify and validate the identity of their clients before providing tax agent services. Sighting your identification documents is part of that process, and it happens after the engagement is signed and before the work starts.
Can I pay monthly instead of in one amount?
Yes. Alongside invoices on seven-day terms, the practice offers a monthly direct debit arrangement for fees, recommended where you use subscription-based services such as Xero or Class, have complex affairs, or need ongoing bookkeeping. Direct debit spreads the cost over the year and does not increase the overall cost of the work.
